CHANDIGARH: Not only is the credibility of Panjab University (PU) taking a dip, now it may even suffer a huge financial loss. The varsity will have to bear the brunt, if the board of BFUHS (Baba Farid University of Health Sciences) decides against paying more than Rs 25 lakh for the botched up job done during the leakage episode of Punjab medical entrance test (PMET) question papers.
Earlier, PU took the responsibility of conducting the PMET on behalf of BFUHS. According to the agreement between the two varsities, BFUHS had to pay Rs 450 per student to PU, the total cost of which came out to be over Rs 45 lakh. Rupees 20 lakh were paid in advance and the rest was to be given after completion of the examination. However, the question paper prepared by PU got leaked a night before the examination which was scheduled for July 1.
The test was then conducted with the help question papers prepared by BFUHS itself, a day later. Meanwhile, BFUHS has not paid the rest of the amount, to tune of Rs 25 lakh, to PU and a decision in this regard will be taken in a board meeting soon. However, PU atleast spent on conducting the examination by making necessary arrangements at various centres and paying the staff on duty. Some expenses were also incurred on checking the papers.
PL Garg, registrar BFUHS said,"The task to conduct PMET was given to PU because of it's credibility and we were paying a high price for it. The same was lost with the paper leak. We have already paid Rs 20 lakh advance and the decision to pay the rest is yet to be taken. Since the question paper prepared by PU got scrapped we spent the entire money to get them re-printed." According to sources, Ravinder Singh, V-C BFUHS met Dr R C Sobti, V-C PU on Wednesday to discuss the issue.
